Year 7 – Girls Tennis Tournament 2017
The late afternoon sun of Wednesday 5th July 2017 sent temperatures soaring into the high 20’s – classic weather for the season’s premier tennis tournament. It was 4pm and an energetic Rafa Nadal had just beaten Donald Young in straight sets – the next matches on were Megan v Hannah on Centre Court, Evie vT Catherine on No 1 and Aysha v Hamayal on Court 2.
The first-round matches were keenly fought in sweltering conditions, with some exhilarating tennis on display – superb serves, rocketing returns, looping lobs, dazzling drop-shots and wonderful winners.
As the temperatures dropped in the balmy evening, the intrepid athletes ground their way through 4 more exhausting and strength sapping rounds with many close results and hard fought tie breaks. Some fantastic forehands and blistering backhands zoomed over the net – there were a few that didn’t make it!
In a shock decision, the BBC had mistakenly decided to cover the Andy Murray v Dustin Brown match at Wimbledon, missing the thrilling action at BB2.
This Year’s Championship was won by Hannah Berry, with the runner’s up position going to Aysha Amin. All competitors should be very proud of their achievements – we look forward to seeing them at Wimbledon in a few years’ time!
